Small businesses are already using AI to make marketing. The question is whether the output is helping the business, or just filling a folder.
Google’s August recap says the Gemini app now generates more than 150 million images a day, and that small businesses are “power users,” leaning on Gemini’s all-in-one image, video, and audio tools to put together marketing materials faster. The same update notes that Gemini can automate actions across 40-plus apps, and that one in five Gemini Live interactions go beyond voice into live camera feeds and screen sharing.
That is a real adoption signal, not a press release.
What the numbers actually say
The 150 million images a day figure is a production number, not a sales number. It tells you that small business owners are already comfortable opening an app, typing a few words, and getting a usable image back. They are using AI the same way they use Canva, Mailchimp, or a printer: as a tool to get marketing out the door.
The 40-plus app automation number tells you something else. People are not just making things in Gemini. They are asking Gemini to do things across their day, including booking rides, reserving tables, and pulling together work. For a local business owner, the practical read is simple: customers are now in the habit of asking an assistant to do the task, not just find the answer.
That is the shift your marketing has to keep up with.
Why this matters for local marketing
If a competitor can make a new flyer, a short video, and a refreshed Google Business Profile photo in an afternoon, your “good enough” asset from six months ago is no longer the bar.
The work is not about whether AI can make a graphic. Of course it can. The work is about what you choose to make, what you leave alone, and what you send out under your own name.
Three practical implications for a local business:
- Production speed has stopped being the advantage. The advantage is picking the right thing to produce and making it specific to your town, your service, your offer. AI can generate a generic lawn care poster in a minute. It cannot generate a poster that says, “We fixed the irrigation on Pine Street on Tuesday, here is the before and after,” unless you give it the proof.
- Consistency is doing more work than ever. If your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and the assets you post on social all say the same thing in the same voice, AI systems can pull from that consistency to recommend you. If they do not, the system has to guess, and it will guess the cleaner competitor.
- The bottleneck moved up the chain. The old bottleneck was, “Can we get this flyer made by Friday?” The new bottleneck is, “Do we know what to ask for, and do we have the proof to feed it?” Owners who treat AI like a junior designer and feed it real photos, real numbers, and real customer language get useful output. Owners who ask it to “make a post about my business” get wallpaper.
The risk of faster content
Faster production also makes it easier to publish more of the wrong thing.
AI will happily write a weekly blog post, a daily social caption, and a refreshed about page on autopilot. None of that is a marketing strategy. It is a publishing schedule. The owner still has to decide what the business is known for, who it serves best, and what it should not waste time saying.
This lines up with what we wrote about in AI only creates value when it fixes the workflow: the value is not in producing more. It is in producing the right things, on a cadence the business can actually maintain, in service of a clear customer.
The owners who get the most out of Gemini in the next six months will not be the ones publishing the most. They will be the ones publishing the most useful.
A practical content system
If you are a local business owner and want to turn AI production into real leads, a simple system beats a fancy one.
- One offer a month, described in plain words, with the real photos and the real price attached.
- The same message on your website, your profile, and the channels you already use.
- Edit every AI output before it goes out. Cut generic language. Add the street, the date, the result.
- Track which asset brought the next call. Drop what does not. Repeat what does.
Where to start this week
You do not need to rebuild your marketing to use this.
Pick the offer that pays the bills this month. Open Gemini, or the AI tool you already have, and write down the five facts a customer needs to know: what it is, who it is for, what it costs, where it happens, and the proof it works. Feed those five facts to the tool, ask for a flyer, a short post, and a profile update, and edit the output until it sounds like you.
If you do that for one offer this week, you will have done more useful AI marketing than most businesses will do all quarter. And you will be ready for the next offer, and the one after that, because the system does not change, only the offer does.
The small businesses that win the next year are not the ones with the most AI output. They are the ones who can turn AI output into a clear answer to a clear customer question, every week, without burning out.
